The National Insurance number is your own personal account, which you keep for life. If you are a UK national it is something that you are given at 16. It records your National Insurance contributions and tax payments directly against your name. You will be asked to prove your identity and so for most people the passport will satisfy that requirement.

The NI interview is not intended to trick you it is simply a short interview to establish that you have a right to an NI number and that you need it for specified purposes.
